Expert Insight on Mining Dust Collection

Mining operations face complex dust collection challenges that demand durable, high-performing solutions built to withstand abrasive materials and harsh environments. Drawing on deep expertise in dust behavior, system design and regulatory compliance, C&W DustTech collaborates closely with Mining operators to develop custom solutions that help mitigate risks, enhance air quality and maintain peak productivity.

To shed light on the critical role dust collection plays in Mining safety and efficiency, we spoke with Veronica Caponio, Director of Sales and a recognized expert in Mining dust collection. In this Q&A, she shares valuable insights into meeting Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements, improving operational efficiency and achieving lasting success through dust collection system design and partnership.

What customer pain points or challenges does C&W DustTech help solve in industrial dust collection?

C&W DustTech helps solve key challenges in industrial dust collection by addressing both regulatory requirements and operational demands. With increased focus from MSHA and stricter silica dust permissible exposure limits (PEL), the need for fully engineered, high-performance dust collection systems is more critical than ever. Many mining operations are located in remote areas with limited access to regular service, making it essential to design systems that are not only effective, but also reliable and low maintenance. A major challenge arises when operational changes – such as increased processing volume – overwhelm existing systems, leading to clogged ductwork and reduced efficiency. C&W tackles these issues through on-site engineering evaluations, assessing current system performance and identifying necessary improvements to ensure ongoing compliance, reliability and operational efficiency.

What are the most common dust-related compliance challenges Mining operations face today, and how can dust collection systems be optimized to reduce regulatory risk?

Dust is generated at nearly every stage of the Mining process – from primary crushing to material handling to final bagging – making it essential to approach dust control with a comprehensive strategy. One of the most common challenges is assuming a single dust collector can manage dust across multiple areas. In reality, effective control requires a fully engineered system with multiple pickup points, carefully designed ductwork and a deep understanding of airflow dynamics. The goal is to capture airborne dust efficiently throughout the facility without collecting the final mine product, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and minimizing fugitive emissions.

The Mining industry is seeing a gradual increase in female participation, with women now representing 15-20% of its global workforce. As an active member of Women in Mining, how has your involvement shaped your perspective on leadership, innovation and change in this industry?

I think increased female representation in leadership roles inspires and empowers more women to pursue advancement within the Mining industry. While progress has been made – with women now comprising approximately 15.7% of the global workforce, a modest increase since 2018 – there remains significant room for growth. Mentorship and professional development are critical to accelerating this shift, alongside embracing technological innovation as a catalyst for change. Organizations like Women in Mining play a vital role in fostering empowerment and career growth. I consider it a privilege to contribute to and grow within such a dynamic and evolving industry!

How does C&W DustTech help companies meet current and future regulations?

C&W DustTech helps mining operations stay ahead of evolving regulations with custom-engineered dust collection systems that set the standard for compliance and are built to meet even the toughest environments. Our MSHA-certified team bring in-depth knowledge of both current standards and upcoming changes – designing systems specifically to ensure compliance with silica dust permissible exposure limits (PELs) and to position our customers for long-term regulatory success. Regulatory updates like MSHA’s revised silica rule only underscore the importance of the approach we’ve always taken. Guided by our core principles – Dust Settles. We Don’t.® and Quality You Can Breathe.® – we remain focused on delivering high-quality, engineered systems that go beyond expectations and deliver lasting value.

How is C&W DustTech using MSHA safety training and industry association involvement to ensure its team stays ahead in dust collection safety and continues delivering value to Mining customers?

We believe continuous learning and collaboration are essential to serving the Mining industry effectively. The Mining community is highly collaborative, and we are actively involved – participating in industry associations, maintaining MSHA certifications and staying current on emerging trends and evolving regulations. Through ongoing training and close partnerships with our Mining customers, we ensure our team remains well-equipped to deliver innovative, compliant and reliable dust collection solutions.

C&W is known for engineering high-performing dust collection systems for challenging applications. How do equipment features, like vertically oriented filter media, demonstrate C&W’s differentiating approach to help Mining operators succeed?

Vertically oriented filter media is a clear example of how we combine performance and practicality. This design improves cleaning efficiency, reduces filter wear and extends service life – key benefits for Mining operations. While features like this set us apart, our true differentiator is our engineering-first approach. Through in-depth site assessments and custom system design, we deliver solutions tailored to each operation’s unique challenges for reliable, long-term performance.
