Silica Dust Collection Compliance

Silica Dust Collection Compliance

Silica Dust Collection Systems that Ensure Compliance

Each year, U.S. regulators link hundreds of fatalities to respirable silica dust in the workplace. Breathing in these crystalline particles found in sand, stone, concrete and mortar applications can lead to fatal diseases like silicosis, lung cancer, kidney disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

In April 2024, MSHA released a new ruling with more stringent limits for silica exposure, now permitting a maximum permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air (µg/m3) during an eight-hour shift. The rule also sets an action level at 25 µg/m³ and includes provisions for exposure monitoring, corrective actions, respiratory protection, medical surveillance, and recordkeeping to protect miners’ health from silica exposure. Clean air technologies, like custom-engineered dust collection systems, that are already engineered to capture dust at these levels are the safest and surest way to ensure compliance and protect your people from respirable silica.

Non-Compliance with Silica Ruling Results in Heavy Penalties

MSHA’s rule also includes updated health and safety requirements for sampling exposure, medical surveillance and corrective actions for exceeding acceptable limits. Failing to comply can leave workers vulnerable to toxic dust and lead to penalties – including fines and process shutdowns – from the Department of Labor.

For resources on compliance with new silica regulations, see MSHA’s news release as well as the full rule issued through the Department of Labor.

Silica Dust Collection Systems Help You Manage Employee Exposure

By customizing a high-performing system to collect 99.9% of dust generated at your facility, you can safeguard employees from respirable silica. C&W DustTech’s state-of-the-art silo, central and mobile dust collectors are designed to perform and built to last as part of your mixing, crushing, grinding, milling, excavating or loading process. You can count on our robust units to provide unmatched dust collection performance, eliminating fugitive dust from the air and proactively reducing the long-term costs of violations.

We know that no two mining applications are exactly the same. That’s why our dedicated engineers work with you to identify the right dust collector size, configuration, cleaning technology, system components and more. As your partner from system design through ongoing maintenance, we provide collectors to meet the exact needs of your applications, facilities and materials.

Committed to your safety and productivity, we engineer silica dust collection systems to capture abrasive and toxic particulate matter in compliance with all national and local standards and regulations. Leveraging insights from more than 45 years of partnerships across heavy industries, like concrete, cement, mining and minerals, we won’t settle until you are in compliance with the new PEL and action levels.

Complete Silica Dust Collection Systems Engineered for Your Health and Safety

Regulators recommend dust collection systems with well-placed pickup points, ducting, a properly sized collector and a disposal system to protect operators.
